Hidden sanctuaries near NYC
by Alyona Kuzmina, photographer & glassblower

"It’s so easy to lose yourself in the fast current of city life. A few years ago, during a difficult period in my life, I discovered a deeper connection with nature. I began hiking and swimming in the rushing waters of waterfalls, and it gave me a grounding sense of peace and connection with myself that I had never felt before.
That experience taught me how simple pleasures—like walking through the forest or swimming beneath a waterfall—can bring clarity to the mind and peace to the heart. I’d love to share some of my favorite hikes and waterfalls where you can refresh both body and soul." —Alyona

Hidden sanctuaries near NYC
Hackers Falls & Cliff Trail Loop (Delaware Water Gap)
This short hike (about 2 hours) is beginner-friendly and rewards you with sweeping forest views and the chance to swim at the base of Hackers Falls. To avoid crowds, weekdays are best. If you can only go on a weekend, try visiting earlier in the morning or closer to 4 p.m. for a quieter experience.
Nearby, you’ll also find Raymondskill Falls, a much larger waterfall worth seeing, and Tumbling Waters Trail, a 1.5-hour trail with a beautiful waterfall in the middle. Tumbling Waters tends to be less crowded and is especially peaceful at sunrise or sunset.

Closer to Connecticut: Saugatuck Falls & Hardwood Trail Loop
If you’re looking for something nearer, I recommend this lovely hike with a small waterfall and a stone-bottom lake that feels magical. If you’re driving, consider stopping at Grace Farms, a beautiful space where you can enjoy lunch before heading out on the trail.
If you’re looking for bigger and more powerful waterfalls, I recommend Bushkill Falls, which are in the same area. They can get a bit crowded on summer weekends, but the experience is still incredible. The loop walk takes you through stunning scenery with multiple waterfalls, making it a truly memorable outing.

These places have been sanctuaries for me, and I hope they can offer you the same sense of grounding and peace. Sometimes, a walk through the woods and a swim in cold, rushing water are the best medicine for both body and soul.
