Table Talk: Kayten Schmidt
Summer Film Recommendations
by Kayten Schmidt, co-founder at Lawrence & Schmidt
Meet Kayten Schmidt, a Los Angeles-based photographer and co-founder of Lawrence & Schmidt. Her capacity to transform the everyday into something otherworldly captivates us — blending sensuality and elegance with a touch of quiet secrecy and connection. With summer on the horizon, we invited Kayten to share her favorite summer films.
Eric Rohmer
No director conjures the feeling of summer more than Eric Rohmer. Nearly half of his films are set in a summer/beach/holiday situation and they all are the sort of films that you carry around inside for a few days, so you could probably spend most of a summer in a Rohmer haze.
Le Rayon Vert, A Tale of Springtime, A Summer's Tale, La Collectionneuse, Claire's Knee, Pauline at the Beach....Low stakes drama, scenery, pops of color, incredible wardrobe and set design, long conversations...
I love a film where nothing really happens, it's such a delight to the nervous system.
Jane B par Agnès V
When I picture Jane Birkin I always see her in jeans and espadrilles with her basket. A picture of quintessential summer style. This film shows the multitudes of Jane's personality and combined with Agnès Varda's sensibility it is something beyond explanation. Honestly I don't think a better film has ever been made. It might be my number one.
That Summer (2017)
What starts seemingly as a documentary about Peter Beard, and/or Lee Radziwell, with a splash of Warhol, Capote, and other various fabulous characters, spending the summer of 1972 in Montauk quickly turns into a prequel to Grey Gardens/The Beals of Grey Gardens. I guess when you have unseen footage of the two Edies the film can't not become about them, two women trapped in a life others only spend their summers in.
